Deployment

Last updated on October 6, 2025

This guide provides a overview of how to deploy the Cryologger Glacier Velocity Tracker (GVT). It is designed for field teams and researchers who need a straightforward and reliable setup guide for Arctic operations.

Overview

The Cryologger GVT is a solar-powered, GNSS-based logging system built for long-term monitoring of glacier surface motion. It includes:

  • A tripod-mounted GNSS antenna and solar panel
  • A sealed enclosure with battery, charge controller, and electronics
  • A lightweight, modular design for ease of field deployment

Tools Required

Deployment Steps

1. Site Selection

  • Choose a flat, stable surface away from crevasses or meltwater channels.
  • Ensure clear sky visibility for GNSS and sun exposure for the solar panel.

2. Tripod Setup

  • Unfold and secure the tripod.
  • Mount the mast and adjust height as needed.
  • Tighten all U-bolts on legs and mast.

3. GNSS Antenna Installation

  • Mount the GNSS antenna on top of the mast.
  • Connect the GNSS cable and route it safely toward the enclosure.

5. Power & Solar

  • Connect the solar panel using the labeled screw terminals on the charge controller.
  • Use electrical tape to secure and insulate exposed leads.
  • Confirm that battery voltage is above the minimum required (12.0 V recommended).

6. Final Checks

  • Watch for status messages on the OLED display on the Cryologger board.
  • Verify all fasteners are tight and cables are secure.
  • Photograph the final deployment for records.

Post-Deployment Notes

  • The GVT will automatically log data to the SD card.
  • Ensure the antenna and solar panel remain free of snow buildup or shadows.
  • Record GNSS coordinates and system voltage in your field notebook.
